DPhil in Surgical Sciences
The DPhil in Surgical Sciences is a full-time doctoral programme offering research training across a range of scientific areas for both clinical and non-clinical graduates.
Full-time course
Three to four years in length
Students on doctoral programmes focus on a specific research project. They work closely with an academic supervisor who oversees their studies, and they produce a thesis that represents a significant and substantial piece of work.
Students in the experimental sciences are also likely to collaborate with their supervisor on shared laboratory work as part of a research team. Joint supervision (i.e. appointment of more than one supervisor) is required by the Division.
After completing their DPhil (as it is known in Oxford – most other universities call it a PhD), research students frequently go on to pursue academic careers or careers requiring advanced research skills. Most commonly, doctoral degrees last three to four years.
Projects that may be available can be found on this website, and any interested candidate is expected to contact a proposed supervisor before applying.
Key benefits
- International teaching team of experts
- Rich and diverse research environment
- Opportunity to network and present your research
- Opportunities to develop your research and professional skills
NDS not only offers a friendly working atmosphere, but also the enthusiasm to drive projects through to completion, to make a clinical difference. Studying in Oxford, supported by the UK'S number one research facility is not only a fantastic opportunity, but also an honour as a junior doctor embarking on an academic career - Dr Katherine Hurst, DPhil in Surgical Sciences
Oxford offers a rich and diverse research environment in the surroundings of a beautiful historic city which I would wholeheartedly recommend to prospective graduate students- Dr Paul Lyon, DPhil in Surgical Sciences
